Model diet for an adult diabetic

Main aims of the diet

1. To stop glycosuria and consequent dehydration.
2. To provide pleasant, adequate and satisfying diet.
3. To bring the body weight to as near normal as to ideal weight.


Requirements

Normal adult requires about 1500-2000 calories per day. About 40% of the energy come from carbohydrates and proteins and 20% from fats. This type of calorie divided diet is ideal for proper maintenance of the growth in diabetic and this type of control will help him in having a prolonged healthy life.


About 1800 calories per day


Morning

6:00 A.M.-Coffee in 60 ml of milk without sugar =40 calories

8:00 A.M.-Dosai 2 with chutney =120 calories
or idlis 2 with chutney=120 calories
or Uppuma ¾ cup with chutney=120 calories
and Coffee in 60 ml of milk without sugar=40 calories

10:00 A.M.-Butter milk 1 cup and 3 cucumber slices=60 calories



Afternoon

12:00 Noon- Rice cooked 2 cups=400 calories
Sambar 1 cup=80 calories
Porial 1 cup=80 calories
Rasam 1 cup=60 calories
Curd 1/2 cup=80 calories


Evening

3:00 P.M.- 3 Glaxo or Monaco biscuits=100 calories
Coffee in 60 ml of milk without sugar=40 calories


6:00 P.M.-Tomato or Lime juice 1 cup=20 calories



Dinner

8:00 P.M.-Rice cooked 2 cups=400 calories
Or Chappati 3 oil 2 tsp=400 calories
Sambar 1 cup=80 calories
Rasam 1 cup=60 calories
Curd 1/2 cup=80 calories


Bed time

10:00 P.M.-Milk 120 ml=80 calories
